The mission of FoodChange is to improve lives through nutrition, education and financial empowerment.

Founded in 1980, FoodChange provides emergency meals to New York City’s hungry children and adults. Through education and direct service, we increase low-income people’s knowledge of nutrition and healthy foods and try to make wholesome eating a daily reality for all New Yorkers . And, to enhance people’s ability to afford healthy foods, we help them identify, capture and maximize all the government benefits to which they are entitled.

As an agent of change, FoodChange realizes that the issues of hunger, nutrition and income are interconnected in a complex way and require creative solutions. We use direct service, education, technical assistance, policy analysis and advocacy to achieve our goals.

Some of our accomplishments since 1980 include:

  • Pioneering free breakfast for the 1.1 million children in the New York City public school system;
  • Screening close to 100,000 New Yorkers for food stamp eligibility;
  • Serving more than 1,250,000 nutritious, hot meals to hungry New Yorkers;
  • Filing approximately 120,000 free quality tax returns for low-income workers;
  • Capturing more than $215 million in tax credits for the working poor;
  • Reaching 2,000,000 low-income New Yorkers annually with our food stamp and Earned Income Tax Credit outreach campaigns.

FoodChange has become a subsidiary of
the Food Bank For New York City
